Marks, shares, conversion rates: part ÷ whole × 100.

From to is a change of=+25%

Percent increase or decrease: (new − old) ÷ old × 100. Salary hikes, price changes, growth.

changed by % becomes=1,199.2

Use a negative percent for a discount: −20% takes 20% off.

is % more than=1,000

Price before tax, salary before the hike: divide by (1 + percent ÷ 100), not multiply by the percent.

The five percentage questions

Almost every percentage problem is one of these: what is X% of Y (discounts, tips, tax); X is what % of Y (marks, shares); the % change from A to B (hikes, growth); Y changed by X% (price after discount); and the reverse, what was the number before an X% increase (price before tax). Each row above is one of them, and the answer updates as you type.

Percent change vs percentage points

Going from 10% to 15% is a 5 percentage-point rise but a 50% increase. Interest rates and poll numbers are usually quoted in points; prices and salaries in percent change. This calculator gives percent change.

The reverse mistake

If a price with 18% tax is 1,180, the tax is not 18% of 1,180. Divide by 1.18 to get 1,000 first. The last row does this; the same logic applies to "my salary after a 10% hike is X, what was it before?".

Quick mental shortcuts

10% is one decimal place to the left; 5% is half of that; 1% is two places to the left. 15% of 240 is 24 + 12 = 36. For a discount, work out the percent and subtract; for the final price, multiply by (100 − discount)%.
