Cent to square feet

1 cent is 435.6 sq ft, because a cent is one hundredth of an acre and an acre is 43,560 sq ft. So 5 cents is 2,178 sq ft, 10 cents is 4,356 sq ft and 50 cents is 21,780 sq ft. Going the other way, divide by 435.6: a 1,200 sq ft plot is 2.75 cents. A cent is also 40.47 square metres, and West Bengal, Bihar and Odisha call the same area a decimal.

Are, cent and hectare (Kerala)

Kerala land records and the 7/12 extracts of Maharashtra use the metric are: 1 are is 100 square metres, or 2.471 cents, or 1,076.4 sq ft. 100 ares make a hectare, which is 2.471 acres or 247.1 cents. To turn a deed's "4.05 ares" into cents, multiply by 2.471: about 10 cents.

Gunta, ground, ankanam and kuncham

A gunta (guntha) is 1,089 sq ft, a square 33 feet on each side, and 40 gunta make an acre. It is used in Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Tamil Nadu sells city plots by the ground: 2,400 sq ft, about 5.5 cents. In Andhra Pradesh an ankanam is 72 sq ft (8 square yards) and a kuncham is a tenth of an acre.

Why bigha and katha change by state

A bigha was a local measure long before standard units, so each region kept its own. In West Bengal and Assam a bigha is 14,400 sq ft; in Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern UP it is about 27,225 sq ft; Himachal uses 8,712 sq ft, and Rajasthan has a pucca bigha of 27,225 and a kachha one of 17,424. Katha is worse: 720 sq ft in Bengal, 1,361 sq ft in Bihar, 2,880 sq ft in Assam. Pick your state above and the converter uses its values.

Marla and kanal

Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Jammu use the marla and kanal. In India a marla is 272.25 sq ft and a kanal is 20 marla, 5,445 sq ft, so 8 kanal make an acre. Pakistani listings use a smaller marla of 225 sq ft, which is why figures found online disagree.

Check the deed, not just the converter

Some districts use their own bigha or katha, and old deeds can use a local measure that is no longer common. If a sale or loan depends on the area, check the land record (patta, khatauni, jamabandi or 7/12) or ask the village officer, and use square feet or square metres in any new agreement.
