KTU's CGPA to percentage formula

KTU converts CGPA (or SGPA) to percentage by multiplying by 10, for the 2015, 2019 and 2024 schemes alike. A CGPA of 7.85 is 78.5%. This replaced the older formulas: University Order 1584/2023 (29 June 2023) changed the 2019 scheme from 10 × CGPA − 2.5, and University Order 1867/2023 (27 July 2023) changed the 2015 scheme from 10 × CGPA − 3.75 for all graduates. Sites that still subtract 2.5 or 3.75, or multiply by 9.5, give a figure KTU no longer uses.

How SGPA is calculated

SGPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points in one semester: multiply each course's credits by its grade point, add them up, and divide by the total credits. A 4-credit course with A (8.5), a 3-credit course with B+ (8) and a 1-credit lab with S (10) give (34 + 24 + 10) ÷ 8 = 8.5. Failed courses count with 0 points, which is why one F pulls the SGPA down sharply.

How CGPA is calculated

CGPA is the same weighted average across every semester so far: each semester's SGPA times its credits, added up, divided by all the credits. A semester with more credits counts for more, so a plain average of SGPAs is only an estimate. Lateral entry students start from the third semester, as the first two do not count for them.

Grade points, 2019 and 2024 schemes

S 10 (90% and above), A+ 9 (85–90), A 8.5 (80–85), B+ 8 (75–80), B 7.5 (70–75), C+ 7 (65–70), C 6.5 (60–65), D 6 (55–60), P 5.5 (50–55). F, FE and I (Ab in 2024) are 0. A CGPA of 8 or more is First Class with Distinction and 6.5 or more is First Class, subject to the other conditions in the regulations.

Grade points, 2015 scheme

O 10, A+ 9, A 8.5, B+ 8, B 7, C 6, P 5, F 0. These are the values from KTU's 2016 amendment, which is what 2015-scheme grade cards print; the first ordinance listed A as 8 and B+ as 7. The 2015 ordinance did not award a class.

The percentage conversion certificate

Many employers, banks and foreign universities ask for a percentage. KTU issues a CGPA to percentage conversion certificate on request, and University Order 1867/2023 says certificates with the new formula are issued to all graduates. KTU also notes that no exact conversion exists, so the certificate's figure is what counts officially.
