How the test works
Pick a time and a passage, then type the passage into the box. The timer starts with your first key and stops when time runs out or you press Submit. Your words are then lined up with the passage: correct words turn green, wrong ones red with what you typed, and skipped ones are struck through. Copy and paste are switched off, as in the exam.
Inscript or Remington GAIL?
Exams that type in Mangal (Unicode) Hindi usually let you choose Inscript or Remington GAIL. Inscript is the government standard: each key always gives the same letter, vowel signs come after the consonant, and the on-screen keyboard here lights up the next key. Remington GAIL follows the old Hindi typewriter, which suits people who learnt on one. To practise Remington GAIL, install it on your computer, choose "My Hindi keyboard" and type as you would in the exam.
Gross speed, net speed and key depressions
Five key depressions count as one word. Gross speed is all your key depressions divided by five, per minute. Net speed takes one word off for each wrong, missed or extra word, so accuracy matters as much as speed. SSC states its speeds in key depressions per hour; the result shows that figure too, so you can compare with your notice.
What speed do exams ask for?
SSC CHSL asks for 30 words a minute in Hindi (about 9,000 key depressions an hour) in its 10-minute typing test, against 35 in English. High court, district court and state LDC or junior assistant tests usually ask for 25 to 30 words a minute in Hindi, and some count half and full mistakes in their own way. Check your notification for its speed, time and how mistakes are counted.
How to get faster
Learn the keys first and speed comes later: type slowly without looking at the keyboard until your fingers find each letter. Practise matras and half letters (्), which are where most Hindi errors happen. Ten to fifteen minutes a day beats an hour once a week. Your best and recent scores for each keyboard are saved in this browser, so you can watch them rise.
Kruti Dev and other fonts
This test uses Unicode Hindi (Mangal), which is what SSC and most online exams use today. Some state and court exams still use Kruti Dev, an older font typed on the Remington layout; its key positions are close to Remington GAIL, so practice here with that keyboard carries over. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
