About HEIC

HEIC is what iPhones shoot by default. Half the size of JPG at the same quality, but Windows, many websites and older Android phones cannot open it.

About JPG

JPG is the everyday photo format: small files, no transparency, a little detail lost each time it is re-saved.

Quality setting

JPG is a lossy format, so a quality level controls the trade-off between file size and detail. 80–90% is visually identical to the original for photos; 60–70% halves the size again with slight softening. The before/after view lets you drag across the image and judge for yourself before downloading.

Transparent areas

JPG cannot store transparency. Any transparent parts of a PNG, WebP or SVG are filled with the background colour you choose, white by default.

Why HEIC files will not open

Apple switched iPhones to HEIC in 2017 for smaller photos. Windows needs a paid extension to view them, many upload forms reject them, and older Android phones cannot open them. Converting to JPG fixes all of that. To stop the problem at the source, set iPhone Settings → Camera → Formats to Most Compatible.
