1 pavan = 8 g · 1 tola = 11.664 g · 1 troy ounce = 31.103 g. Rates in India are quoted per gram or per 10 g; international prices are per troy ounce. The price above is for the gold alone, before making charges and GST.

1 tola in grams

1 tola is 11.664 grams (11.6638 g exactly), the Indian weight of 180 grains fixed in British times and still used for gold in North India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Gulf. 2 tola is 23.33 g, 5 tola is 58.32 g and 10 tola is 116.64 g. Going the other way, 10 grams is 0.857 tola and 100 grams is 8.57 tola. Some shops round a tola to 12 g or call 10 g a tola, so check which one a price uses.

1 pavan in grams

1 pavan (also called a sovereign or savaran) is 8 grams. It is how gold is weighed and priced in Kerala and Tamil Nadu: 2 pavan is 16 g, 5 pavan 40 g and 10 pavan 80 g. 1 gram is 0.125 pavan, so a 12 g chain is 1.5 pavan. The British sovereign coin the name comes from weighs 7.988 g, but jewellers use a round 8 g.

Troy ounce, masha and ratti

World gold prices are per troy ounce, which is 31.103 grams, about 2.67 tola or 3.89 pavan. It is heavier than the everyday ounce of 28.35 g. Older Indian weights split the tola into 12 masha (0.972 g each) and the masha into 8 ratti (0.1215 g each); astrologers still sell gemstones by the ratti, though gem dealers often use a larger ratti of about 0.18 g.

Price per tola or pavan from the rate per gram

Multiply the rate per gram by the weight of the unit. At ₹12,000 a gram, 1 pavan costs 8 × 12,000 = ₹96,000, 1 tola 11.664 × 12,000 = ₹1,39,966 and 10 g ₹1,20,000. Enter the day's rate above to see every unit. These figures are for the gold alone; for jewellery add making charges, wastage and 3% GST in the gold price calculator.

Which rate to use

Shops show separate rates for 24 carat (999, coins and bars), 22 carat (916, most jewellery) and 18 carat (750). Use the rate for the purity you are buying. A 22 carat rate is about 91.6% of the 24 carat rate.
