Coins and bars

Gold coins and bars usually have little or no making charge, so the same 8 g as a coin would cost about ₹1,07,120. Jewellery is for wearing; for saving, compare with coins first.

1 pavan = 8 g · 1 tola = 11.664 g · 1 troy ounce = 31.103 g. Rates in India are quoted per gram or per 10 g; international prices are per troy ounce. The price above is for the gold alone, before making charges and GST.

How a gold jewellery bill is worked out

Gold value is the weight in grams times the day's rate for that purity. The jeweller adds making charges (and sometimes a separate wastage or value-addition charge), any stone charges, then GST at 3% on that whole amount. Hallmarking is billed per piece. Old gold you hand over is valued at the jeweller's buying rate and taken off the total.

Worked example: 1 pavan at ₹13,000 a gram

One pavan is 8 grams, so the gold value is 8 × 13,000 = ₹1,04,000. Making at 10% adds ₹10,400, making ₹1,14,400. GST at 3% on that is ₹3,432. One hallmark at ₹45 plus 18% GST is ₹53.10. The bill comes to ₹1,17,885, about ₹14,736 a gram, so the real price is 13.4% above the board rate.

GST on gold and making charges

Jewellery sold by a shop is one finished product, so GST is 3% on the full value including making charges. You may read that making charges carry 5% GST: that rate is for job work, when you give your own gold to a goldsmith and pay only for the labour. Hallmarking is a separate service with 18% GST on its fee.

Pavan, sovereign and gram

In Kerala and Tamil Nadu gold is quoted by the pavan (also called a sovereign), which is 8 grams. Switch the rate or weight to pavan and the calculator converts. A 22-carat piece is marked 916, meaning 91.6% pure gold; 18 carat is 750. Use the rate for the purity you are buying, not the 24-carat rate.

Pavan, tola and ounce in grams

1 pavan (sovereign) is 8 grams, so 2 pavan is 16 g and 10 pavan is 80 g. 1 tola is 11.664 grams, the old Indian weight of 180 grains still used in North India, Nepal, Pakistan and the Gulf; 10 grams is 0.857 tola. A troy ounce, the unit of world gold prices, is 31.103 grams, or about 3.89 pavan. A tola has 12 masha and a masha 8 ratti, so 1 masha is 0.972 g and 1 ratti 0.1215 g. The converter under the bill does any of these.

Making charges, wastage and how to compare shops

Making is quoted as a percentage of gold value, a fixed amount per gram, or a flat figure for the piece. Plain chains and bangles often carry 3–12%; detailed or antique designs can be 15–25% or more. Some Kerala jewellers show a value-addition (VA) or wastage percentage instead of, or as well as, making. Compare shops on the final price for the same weight, or on the real price per gram shown above.

Old gold exchange

When you exchange old jewellery, the jeweller tests its purity and pays a rate below the day's selling rate, after deducting for impurities and stones. Ask for the tested purity and the rate per gram before agreeing, enter them in the old gold fields, and the calculator shows what you still owe.
