$1,000.00 × 20% = $200.00 VAT; total $1,200.00.

Adding VAT

VAT = net price × rate ÷ 100, and the gross price is net plus VAT. At the UK standard rate of 20%, £100 net becomes £120 gross. Choose your country's rate above or type any percentage.

Working VAT backwards

To find the VAT inside a gross price, divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100): £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net, so £20 is VAT. At 20% this is the same as gross ÷ 6; at 5% it is gross ÷ 21. Multiplying the gross figure by the rate gives the wrong answer.

Rates around the world

Standard VAT rates include 20% in the UK and France, 19% in Germany, 21% in Spain and the Netherlands, 23% in Ireland and Poland, 25% in Sweden and Denmark, 5% in the UAE and 7–10% in much of Asia. Reduced rates apply to food, books, children's items and energy in many countries.

Reclaiming VAT

VAT-registered businesses reclaim VAT paid on purchases and pay the net difference. Consumers cannot, which is why the gross price is what matters to them.
