How interest between two dates is worked out

Simple interest is amount × yearly rate × time in years. With exact-day counting, time is the number of days between the dates divided by 365, which is how banks, courts and most loan agreements count. 1,00,000 at 12% from 1 January to 1 March 2026 is 59 days, so the interest is 1,00,000 × 12% × 59 ÷ 365 = ₹1,940. The start day is not counted and the end day is, so 1 to 2 January is one day.

"₹2 per ₹100" interest (two-rupee interest)

Private lenders, chit groups and families often quote interest as rupees per hundred per month: "2 rupee interest" means ₹2 on every ₹100 each month. That is 2% a month, or 24% a year. One rupee interest is 12% a year and three rupee interest is 36% a year. Pick "Per month" next to the rate and type the rupee figure as it is.

Months + days counting

Lenders usually count whole calendar months and then the leftover days as a fraction of a 30-day month. From 1 January to 16 April is 3 months and 15 days, so ₹1,00,000 at ₹2 per ₹100 is 3.5 × ₹2,000 = ₹7,000. Exact days would give 105 days × 24% ÷ 365 = ₹6,904. The two methods give different numbers for the same dates; the calculator shows both so you can agree on one before settling.

Simple or compound

Most short private loans and gold loans are simple interest: interest is charged on the original amount only. Fixed deposits and long unpaid loans compound: interest is added to the balance every quarter or year and then earns interest itself. Bank FDs in India usually compound quarterly. For a period that is not a whole number of compounding steps, the calculator uses the standard formula with a fractional power, which is what bank FD calculators do.

Typical uses

Interest owed on a hand loan between the date given and the date returned, interest on a late payment or security deposit, gold loan interest for the days the gold was pledged, FD interest for an odd number of days, and checking a lender's figure before paying.
